Policoro
Policoro, is a town that draws its origins from an ancient city of Magna Graecia, Heraklea. In the past, this was an important city, because it was here that Pyrrhus fought a great battle against the Roman army.
Policoro is home to the National Museum of Siritide which houses Greek historical finds from the ancient cities of Heraklea and Siris. The finds preserved are of great value, from handcrafted jewellery to bronze armour.
In addition to the ancient Greek remains (you can also visit the Sanctuary of Demeter and the Archaic Temple of Dionysus), Policoro offers a splendid sea, beautiful, awarded with the Blue Flag in recent years as well as in 2019.
Even these waters have been chosen by the carretta carretta turtle to lay their eggs! Even the beaches of Policoro are no less: long expanses of light and soft sand meet the clear sea, creating fabulous views.
Moreover, in Policoro and in the nearby villages, every summer there are many events, festivals and fairs that propose typical local products and folkloristic shows.
